From the desk of:
Thomas M. Andrews, M.D.
Joe,
I wanted to take a moment to let you know how much I appreciate your impact on my life. Your excellent skills in therapy and your keen insight into physical complaints are key to keeping me healthy and able to complete my goals. My success in the The Ironman is due to you. Yours, Tom

Father of an athlete.
My son was referred to Joe Millen by a doctor because he was not recovering from shoulder surgery after a football injury. While rehabbing my son's shoulder Joe outlined a comprehensive "whole body" conditioning program designed to make him a better player. My son's shoulder is now stronger than ever and he was singled out for his performance at a recent major college camp.
After watching how he worked with my son, I started a conditioning program with Joe nine months ago. I noticed that IHP's client base was full of doctors and their families! I realized he is the doctors' doctor.
Who's Joe?
My name is Joe Millen. I’m the founder and owner of Impact Health and Performance.
I am a licensed physical therapist with over 25 years of clinical practice and also a certified manual therapist. I was first interested in physical therapy when I was in high school. I suffered a knee injury that required surgery and an extensive rehabilitation at a sports medicine clinic. I also volunteered with the Muscular Dystrophy Association working with children and adults suffering from muscular disease. I wanted to make a difference. So I went to college and was fortunate to get into a very good physical therapy program at Oakland University.
Physical Therapy is my passion, second only to my wife and family. I have made it my guiding principle to deliver the care that I would expect as an expert in the field. Over time this has become more and more difficult, not because my principles have changed but because healthcare has changed. We have had to figure out who our client is; you the patient/client, the third party payer, the doctor refering you, or all of the above. We became more focused on who paid and refered than on who we were treating. That has never worked for me. I believe that we need to be responsible to each other. You, as my client, are my focus; not your insurance company, not your refering doctor. I will communicate with them on your behalf which is my professional responsibility. My approach with clients has developed over time. I realized I am much more successful when I approached every client assessment looking at the total body rather than any one pain or ailment. I now call this approach “Total Body Health and Wellness”.
My mission is to help every client achieve one or more of the following goals:
Regain their health: A client may have been injured, suffered an illness or simply allowed themselves to fall away from optimal health.
Gain long term wellness: Many times client’s lifestyles make it difficult to maintain a healthful state. We can work with clients, on a long term basis, using nutrition, exercise, yoga, massage and other techniques to allow them to enjoy a sustained state of wellness.
Achieve Peak performance: Athlete’s at the highest levels have coaches and trainers. Those professionals make sure the athlete is training his/her body to function at its highest level. They also make sure the athlete is using the best techniques of the sport to get the best outcome. We can do some of those things for you. You may not ever win a major tournament but we can help you be the best you there is.
The Total Body Health team consists of experienced clinicians, physical therapists, personal trainers, plus trained massage therapists, and instructors in yoga. My job is to make sure you see the right therapist at the right time in a way that provides you the best outcome.
Responsibility for your health is yours. You are the CEO of your life and your health. We are here to guide you and advise you. Your health is not based on performance but your performance is based on your health.
We strive for your total body health and wellness. We make you part of your health process because you are the only one whose life depends on it.
Who's Philip?
I am a graduate of the University of South Florida, School of Physical
Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences, where I earned a Doctor of Physical Therapy. I also completed my undergraduate studies at
the University of South Florida with a BS degree in Psychology, and a minor in
Applied Biomedical Physics.
Prior to my undergraduate career at USF, I served in the United States
Navy for four years with a tour of the Middle East where I achieved a variety
of awards including 2 good conduct medals, armed forces expeditionary medal,
and a letter of commendation from my Commanding Officer. While in the military I was part of Rescue
swimmers for my ship and was the leading fire fighter for #1 hose crew on our
ship board fire fighting team.
The duties on board ship influenced my outlook for practicing physical
therapy by putting the patient first and then addressing the dysfunction rather
than just the dysfunction.
I feel that often therapists do not take the time look at the
individual. That in my opinion is unfair treatment to the patient/client. For
this reason I became involved with Joe Millen, creator of "Impact Health and
Performance".
Some of my areas of interest include:
-Manual resistive exercise training allows the patient to focus on proper
isolation of simple and combined muscle groups while maintaining the integrity
of the joints
-Kinesiology- study and understanding of the movements and the biomechanics
of the joints of the body
-Sports specific training focuses on coordinated patterns of movement
while engaging the stabilization muscles throughout the body producing greater
precision, control, and power.
-Currently involved in West Coast Brace and Limb Amputee support groups
to help amputees with the limitations they face with rehabilitation,
re-integrate them into the sports environment, and give them the education and
motivation to take responsibility for themselves to achieve a healthy lifestyle.
-Currently involved with "Crossfit Fitness Training" The Next Level
Tampa; a training program that utilizes the philosophies of Olympic lifting,
boot camp, cross training, strength and stability training. I am the onsite
physical therapist working with injured personnel and also work and educate the
trainers on joint mechanics and flexibility training.
I am also seeking to achieve my certification in Manual Therapy; a
clinical approach that uses specific hands on techniques to treat soft tissues
and joint structures by utilizing joint mobilizations and manipulations for
modulation of pain, inflammation, range of motion, and other functional
deficits
